3PAR Utility Storage Chosen by AMS for Mission Critical Applications

Premier Business and IT Consulting Firm Selects 3PAR for its own IT consolidation

FREMONT CA, US — December 8, 2003

3PAR®, the leading provider of Utility Storage, announced today that American Management Systems, Incorporated (NASDAQ: AMSY), a global business and IT consulting firm headquartered in Fairfax, Va., has purchased and successfully deployed the 3PAR InServ® Storage Server. A Fortune 1000 business consultant and systems integrator to the government, financial services and communications industries around the globe, AMS selected 3PAR to support mission-critical timekeeping, purchasing, CRM, and messaging applications for its more than 6,000 employees.

AMS chose to consolidate its IT infrastructure to achieve greater simplicity, efficiency, and responsiveness. To underpin this environment, AMS sought a highly scalable, flexible, and virtualized storage platform—one that could deliver seamless sharing of resources. With 3PAR Utility Storage, AMS consolidated multiple storage devices and applications onto a cost-effective InServ Storage Server, while retaining the ability to expand simply and massively as required.

"We compete in a very dynamic industry and 3PAR Utility Storage empowers us to respond in record time," said Don Hirsch, vice president of Corporate IT for AMS. "We no longer have to think about storage, it's just there when we need it."

Realized Benefits: Better Responsiveness and Utilization
AMS chose to evolve its datacenter to support rapid growth and superior service levels. Key success criteria included reducing administration and management costs, and optimizing compute and storage resources. The company chose a two-pronged approach for its virtual data center: storage virtualization with 3PAR and server virtualization with VMware. With 3PAR and VMware, AMS was able to deploy a flexible, high performance storage and server platform for more responsive IT services. Since deployment, AMS has simplified its storage and server management, while increasing effective storage utilization by 40%.

"Virtualization techniques that allocate storage as data is written to a logical volume, rather than at volume creation time, can increase utilization rates while greatly simplifying storage provisioning," said Stan Zaffos, Research VP at Gartner. "It also allows users to over-commit storage resources which is a particularly valuable trait when consolidating storage."

The simplicity and ease-of-use of the 3PAR system has already let AMS respond quickly to change. Only a few months after deploying the initial 6-terabyte system, AMS reacted to new storage demand by installing an additional 4 terabytes. The entire upgrade process took less than half an hour, and the added resources were immediately available for shared use across the entire system.

"AMS is an expert customer," remarked David Scott, President and CEO of 3PAR. "Their choice of Utility Storage deployed in a mission-critical production environment is tremendous validation for this category of storage that 3PAR has brought to market."

AMS has deployed a 3PAR InServ S400 model equipped with 3PAR's InForm® Operating System, which delivers volume management and storage virtualization. AMS also purchased 3PAR Access Guard, Full Copy, and 3PAR's flexible and powerful Virtual Copy software. Primary host applications include Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange, and VMware. AMS is utilizing VMware to consolidate a wide variety of applications on a small number of 3PAR InServ connected hosts.
